Son of Henry Martyn and Mary Lucretia (Dickinson) Smith, Carlton Stedman Smith was born 8 June 1887 in Bridgeport, CT. Carlton was raised in Bridgeport, Hartford and Newtown, CT. He graduated from Newtown High School in 1907 and Yale University in 1911.
In 1913, he married in Brooklyn, NY, Emma Purdy McClellan (1887-1978), the daughter of Stephen Bredin and Ester Lavinia (Hacker) McClellan. The couple had one daughter, Emma Louise (1918-2006).
Carlton lived most of his adult life in Brooklyn, NY and Milford, CT, where he had a summer home. He worked for 40 years as an auditor for Mutual Life Insurance Co. of New York. Several years after retiring, he and his wife moved to Hastings-on-Hudson, NY.
Carlton died 2 Feb 1968 in Yonkers, NY. He and his wife are buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hastings-on-Hudson, NY.
