Born, 18 April 1918, Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of Carlton Stedman and Emma Purdy McClellan (Smith).  She graduated from Barnard College in 1939 and Columbia Teachers College.  7 March 1942, she married in Brooklyn, Leo James Rainwater (1917-1986).  The couple had 4 children.  She died 20 Jan 2006 and is buried with her husband, her daughter Elizabeth and her parents at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hastings-on-Hudson, NY.
