This tintype is not labeled but as Ellen Jackson was, as far as I know, the only African American connected with the family and as this is the only picture of an African American in the collection, I am taking a leap of faith.
Ellen M Jackson (aka Mary E Jackson) lived with and worked for the Smith family for over 20 years. She is likely the daughter of William and Harriet Jackson (see 1850 and 1860 censuses for Pomfret, CT).
She died in South Amherst, 11 January 1883 and is buried in the Smith family plot at Ashleyville Cemetery, West Springfield. Her stone reads “Ellen M Jackson died Jan 1883 age 38 yrs. 11 mos. 18 das. A faithful helper in the family for more than 20 years. Faithful unto death.” (Corbin Collection v. 2).
